This study was funded by a U.S. Geological Survey EDMap grant, and the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries. The Department of Geology kept me financially solvent with a teaching assistantship throughout my graduate work.
This research would not have been possible without the guidance and support from my advisor Michael Cummings. Grant writing, field visits, office visits, editing, and great discussions are some of the many contributions that he has made. His dedication to education is unsurpassed. Kenneth Cruikshank helped extensively with geostatistical analysis of geochemical data, GIS applications, and advice on structure. Jim O’Connor helped with the estimates of the magnitude of the downstream flooding. Marvin Beeson took time out of his retirement for my INAA work. GIS advice was also provided by David Percy. Paul Layer at the Geochronology Laboratory of the University of Alaska Fairbanks provided much needed age dating for the Wocus Bay quadrangle. Tom Douglas from the Earth Sciences Department at Dartmouth is acknowledged for his deuterium analysis. Winema National Forest provided maps and lent aerial photographs. My fellow students who listened to me talk about pumice for two years.
Field assistantship for the mapping project was dutifully provided by Charlie Palmer (Ponch). Ponch’s hand augering, burrito recipes, and prowess with a Fat Cat are the modern legends of Klamath Marsh. Cynthia Restrepo assisted in the terrace surveys and boulder measurements. Stuart Cowburn and Heather Bragg helped gauge the mighty Williamson. Christy Lee provided information on the geology of Soloman Butte. Jason Hinkle swiftly elevated crew moral with ice cold Blitz, and a dozen donuts from Joe’s. The Honda Corporation is acknowledged for producing the Fat Cat, the ultimate in central Oregon field transportation. The faithful service of my computer Ramona. Patricia Heiser provided helpful advice, a writing vacation at her farm, and fun visits. My parents have supported me morally and financially throughout my education.
