Figure 4: GIS-LIDAR Map of 1) radiocarbon sample sites, 2) early historic
shoreline position from 1870’s US T-sheets (seaward north-south line;
Kaminsky et al., 1999), 3) key foredune ridges (north-south lines), GPR
tracklines (west-east lines from Figure 3), and identified beach retreat
features (letters) in the CRLC. Background topography (color key) is from
a LIDAR survey (Daniels, 2000). Radiocarbon sample dates are from Rankin
(1983), Woxell (1998), Herb (2000), and Schlichting (2000). The radiocarbon
sample dates are listed with UTM coordinates in Table
2. Identified foredune beach-ridges from west to east are the ‘Big
Dune Ridge’ set (0.3-1 ka), the ‘Mid-Dune Ridge’ set (>2.5 ka) and the
‘Old Dune Ridge’ (~4.2 ka). These master ridges or ridge sets are generally
separated by broad interdune-valleys. Additional foredune-beach ridges
are apparent in the LIDAR topography. More detailed analysis of the foredune
beach-ridges in some subcells have been performed by Rankin (1983), Phipps
and Messmer (1984), and Reckendorf et al. (2001). A detailed compilation
of the CRLC foredune beach-ridges is underway.
