- Description:

- Abstract:
-
Foredunes are a series of parallel ridges with some
difference in length and height.
Recent work along the Columbia River cell as part of
research project "USGS Southwest Washington Beach
Erosion" has remapped using large- scale photography
and topographic maps.
The 3 foredune ridges represented in this data set are a
composite of up to 17 actual duneridges that occur within
the study area.
Further work is under way to firmly identify individual ridges.
The "ridges" in this data set do not represent any single
ridge, they should be considered a fuzzy swath of ridges of
similar age.
- Purpose:
-
The purpose of this work is to establish the locations of
foredune ridges occurring in the 4 sub-littoral cells of
the Columbia River littoral cell.

Attribute value of dunetype are accurate according to the
model developed by Reckendorf, Peterson and Phipps.

In terms of the model used, the attributes are logically
consistent, ie older dunes are eastward of younger dunes.

RMS error during digitizing was in general approximately 30
meters for individual ridges. The ridge-composites in this
data set are accurate to approximately 100 meters, with an
approximate width ranging from 200 to 800 meters,
averaging 500 meters. Thus, a 200-500m buffer could be
used to represent these swaths.

6000 blue sheets
from air photos, with extensive groundtruthing.
Consequently the blue sheets were registed to geographic
coordinates using street intersections referenced to 1995
TIGER line coverages. They were then digitized from these
blue sheets.
