Description:
Abstract:
Radiocarbon dating of shoreface deposits, e.g., wood, shell and peat materials, has been performed for various sedimentology, archaeology, and paleotsunami investigations in the study area. The radiocarbon dates range from about 5 ka, establishing the onset of beach progradation at the preserved backedge of the Long Beach subcell, to historical time in modern beaches along the broad barriers and beach plains. Caution should be used in interpreting the beach-plain radiocarbon dates, as outlined below. Beach deposits can include older shell and wood materials that are reworked and re-deposited during shoreface retreat events. For example the reworking of an existing foredune-ridge paleosol by a catastrophic beach retreat event could incorporate 'old' wood or charcoal into the younger beach-scarp deposit. On the other hand interdune-valley pond and peat deposits develop well after shoreline progradation. For example, a net 1-3 m rise in sea-level required to flood the interdune-valleys after beach progradation should occur on millennium time scales, i.e., about one meter sea-level rise per 1,000 years in late-Holocene time. Therefore, basal peat deposits in the interdune-valleys likely post-date the shoreline progradation by one or more millennia. As a final example of age bias the C14-dated archaeological sites on foredune-ridges are assumed to post-date shoreline progradation. The cultural sites were likely located landward of active foredunes, i.e., in forested dune-ridges. Such locations would have reduced the occupants' exposure to onshore wind, blowing sand, and winter rain. In summary, the radiocarbon dating of beach plain samples yields limiting dates of shoreline positions that are useful for long-term (millennium) periods of net progradation. Higher-resolution shoreline mapping requires other proxies that represent geologically instantaneous events throughout the littoral cell.
Purpose:
The primary purpose of this work is to determine the age of materials and use them in a geological context.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Most C14 attribute fields (setting, material type) are not uniquely defined. Age field and st dev are received from the reporting lab.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
All data sets within this report are logically consistent, particularly in regard to the temporal domain. That is, dunerige timelines do not cross scarp timelines. Care must be taken with the C14 interpretations.
Completeness_Report:
Data is complete at this level of detail. Further work could reveal more detail.
